## Foundation & Event Overview

The Byron Nelson is a significant golf tournament on the PGA Tour with a rich history tied to both the sport and charitable giving. It's one of only two PGA Tour events named after a professional golfer, the legendary Byron Nelson.

A Storied History of Locations and Names
The tournament, which began in 1944 as the Texas Victory Open, has undergone numerous name and location changes over the decades. Byron Nelson himself won that first event, and in 1968, the tournament was officially renamed the Byron Nelson Golf Classic to honor him.

For much of its history, the tournament was played at various courses around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, including Oak Cliff Country Club and Preston Trail Golf Club. From 1983 to 2017, it was held at TPC at Las Colinas in Irving, and from 1994 to 2007, it even used two courses to speed up the early rounds. The tournament moved to a new home in downtown Dallas at Trinity Forest Golf Club for a brief period before landing at its current location, TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, in 2021. The most recent name change came in 2024, when it was rebranded as the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

A Legacy of Philanthropy
Beyond the golf course, the Byron Nelson tournament is renowned for its charitable impact. Hosted by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, a civic organization with a 600-member base, the event is the PGA Tour's leading fundraiser for charity. It has raised over $190 million for the Momentous Institute, a nonprofit that provides mental health care and education for children and families.

Byron Nelson's commitment to philanthropy was a core part of his legacy. He believed that using his fame to help others was a greater measure of success than his on-course achievements, which included 52 PGA Tour victories and an incredible 11 consecutive wins in 1945. The tournament continues to embody his spirit of giving back to the community.
